“An art book is a museum without walls.”
– Andre Malraux
A new exhibition of 21st Editions books entitled The Art of the Book opened last week at the Museum of Printing History in Houston, TX. The show is curated by Amanda Stevenson and will be on view through May 19, 2012. A highlight of the show was a fabulous new book from their collection, Imogen Cunningham: Platinum / Palladium published with the support of The Imogen Cunningham Trust. Cunningham is considered to have been one of the greatest American women photographers of the twentieth century. She is widely
recognized for her graphic and dramatic botanical photography, nudes, and industrial landscapes. A collection of her ART can be found at the Smithsonian. Not surprisingly, this stunning new, limited edition publication of her work sold out within days!
21ST Editions started in 1998, brings together a wide variety of photographic work with the finest international writers, poets, and essayists. In 2000 the press expanded its offerings to include fine press, handmade monographs, and in 2010 the new Prism Series was introduced. Each of these hand-crafted monographs incorporates new writing by the artists themselves, leading contemporary
historians, critics, poets, novelists, and philosophers. 21ST Editions titles have been acquired by over 50 U.S. and international museums and special collections libraries throughout the country. They’re committed to revitalizing the centuries old ART of fine book making, with the goal of making each volume an object of beauty that reflects the highest standards of craftsmanship and artistic and cultural significance.
